Not such a bad town... except for the lack of good beer!

I stayed at a hotel right next to the ballpark and hoop arena. Made it easy to catch a quick game.

Unfortunately that proximity meant that i had to carry my 100+ pounds of stuff to the arena each day. The mini bar made the return trip a bit more bearable.

The playoff games were entertaining, but in the end disappointing.

The trailer is nearly done being edited. Next up we make our pitch to two potential investors. Where things go from there?...who knows. At the very least, we made a kick ass trailer and learned a ton.

One wonderful woman in the creative department recruited me to shoot her new promo for one of our new segments.

It was super fun to shoot on the white sheet with the tiny HDcam and be able to tell people what to do and where to move... Though the kids kind of did whatever they wanted any way.

The best part is that I have no other responsibility than shooting this thing. Erica now has the fun task of going through all the video, putting it to the music, adding the voice track, and graphic. An unenviable task, I might add.

I was talking with a work friend today and we were discussing the greatest adventures that we've had thus far. We had so much fun that we made up a Top Five Greatest Moments list. This got me thinking. What were the greatest moments of my time in Hippieville?

I drove Jed crazy that day I stole his prized chair and locked it away in the studio storage area.

In case you missed it, about three months ago I was walking through a landscaped area around Hayward Field, when I suddenly tripped on a tree root that was poking out of the ground, sending me crashing to the earth in a thundering heap. As I fell to the ground, I attempted the "aircraft carrier landing" technique for saving the camera...i.e. let it glide to the ground flat on his base. That didn't work in this case though...mostly because the landscaped area was riddled with many giant rocks poking out of the ground. So my lens crash landed into one of those rocks, tweaking it a bit. Basically, the focus ring wouldn't turn. So...the most wonderful lens a man could ask for, which shoots at this super-extra wide angle when pulled all the way out, was out for the count. After much lobbying and arguing, I managed the convince the powers that be to pay to fix the lens. $1200 dollars and three months later, I got my lens back, which I will now treat like the Holy Grail.

The fatty-wide shot is back, people!

After we were done, we wandered up into the building and found some other pretty sweet looking locations. We decided we're going to go back to shoot there again very soon.

So...in the wake of O-to the-S to-the-N going bye-bye at the station...we've been slowly moving out of the upstairs sports office. First the two anchors moved downstairs. Then Schop was sent down. For the past 3 months...it's been me all by my lonesome in the sports office. But now, the time has come for me to make the move down.

I'm being given my old office back. It's been a storage facility for the last year. Today I moved all of the crap out of the office...prepping it for ME.

Anyway...my Avid is getting moved into the office, along with several bookshelves full of sports tapes, etc. Basically, I get my own private editing room. Pretty sweet.

As for the box o' cards...

While digging through the mountains of beta tapes, Jesse England origami airplanes, and audio cables...I stumbled upon a box...

...full of photog business cards.

There were some KRI's...some CDA's...some JDE's...some RSH's...some JJU's...and some CNE's...

There were no KCA's, but I did find a big beta tape labeled, Kash's Save Tape. So I threw that out.

Anyway...it was an entertaining day of digging through old crap in the old office...which is about to become my new office/edit bay/sports office number 2, which is directly across from sports office number 1, on the other side of the news editing area.

For about the past month I've had a cold that just won't go away. None of the usual remedies have worked, those being sleep, video games, and alcohol. So figured it was time to see a professional. As most of you know the doctor's office isn't quick like a drive thru. You wait in the waiting room, and just like in Seinfeld you wait again in the smaller waiting room. Well that was most of my morning. When the doc finally imparts his wisdom and gives me the key to wellness... it's SUDAFED!

Yeah, that stuff you could just go and buy in any store up until a few years ago, stuff that I would have probably tried by now! I spent my whole freaking morning waiting to get this crap thanks to overbearing politicians and meth cooks! Fuck!

Election Mania VIII

My election night started with a briefing on how all the troops had to be prepared for anything to happen. I was given my assignment and out the door the reporter and I went.

First stop: the Repuplican candidate for County Commision Seat C.

The candidate had a modest gathering of five or six friends joining her at her house to watch the results come in.

There was a delicious assortment of meats and cheese of which I quite enjoyed.

But soon as early numbers were tallied, and as McCain conceded the forecast for this small group looked not so good. There was only one thing left for us to do.......

Next Stop: Democratic candidate for County Commision Seat C party.

Now this was a party! There were signs, ballons, and a band.

Also the free food was of much higher quality. Check out my reporter buddy doing some investigative reporting on which entree tastes the best.

The atmosphere was also much more possitive at this party. The winner was not willing to claim victory so quickly...there was still alot of votes to count. Between you and me....he had it locked!

So as it turns out with the Presidential election being a historic one, and all the surprising outcomes of the state races, the producers forgot all about us. NO live shots. No video needed. Only thing wanted was a sound bite from the winner.

Who am I to complain? It was an easy night. I had free food all day, and most likely the assignment with the least amount of responsiblity.

I left the office tonight for Dancer's watch party at a coffee shop in North Eugene. Upon arrival, I was bombarded by a reunion of many of the old guard at KEEZEE. Ash, Bruce, Carr...etc. I got so caught up in catching up with the homies...I completely missed the historic win by Obama. It wasn't until I left and was on the way home that I noticed my favorite candidate won. I guess that's what happens when you're at a Repub party.

Oh...and Dance-Man kept it really close...but last we heard he was down about 5%.

So...two days ago, the Beltline fly over was supposed to open.

ODOT leaked the news to the Guard...and the Guard splattered the largest pic of all time on their front page, with the headline "the bridge is open!" -- or some shit.

Funny thing though...the bridge didn't open that day, because the machine that paints the lines on the road, broke in the middle of the night...only a few hours before the papers hit everyone's porch. So their bold attempt to be ahead of the story backfired. Ha ha! Newspapers are stupid.

Anyway...it's open now. I'll drive over it later this afternoon when I go to work. Whoopee.

We bought the rental we were living in, from a man formerly known as ALP.

It feels good to own a home. I made my first mortgage payment today. It's much easier to cut a check that mostly goes back to yourself, rather than some landlord...or apartment company...or whatever.

I recommend purchasing...especially now that the economy is soaring so high.

The elephants are gathering in my backyard.

My job? To shoot live shots and protest rallies from atop the Smith Ave parking ramp.

From here I have a great view of the enormous FOX tent (which I hear has four different sets inside and a delicious food selection), and the CNN grill. CNN has rented out the Eagle St. grill and has completely renovated the inside as their headquarters/ news set.

Today I learned the set up, shot a 5:30 live shot, read my book, socialized, watched some tv, ate a tasty sandwich, socialized some more, set up for a night live shot, shot two 10 lives, and cleaned-up.

Tomorrow promises to be much of the same, but with more protesters.

BAND DORKS? OR BAND REBELS?!

So I'm kicking back during halftime of the Saturday Duck game...when I notice the Oregon band is dressed in some pretty drab band gear. Usually marching bands are supposed to be clad in felt and tassels from head to toe. These dorks were dressed in yellow t's and khakis.

I made a brief inquiry (brief only because I didn't care all that much) and found out the story behind the story.

Apparently the band was sick of never getting new uniforms...complained to the powers that be...and with all that Phil Knight money floating around...somehow got Phil to buy them new uniforms. But, apparently those new uniforms were exactly the same as their old uniforms...which pissed off the tuba toters. So as a blatant act of rebellion, the band geeks are protesting by wearing khakis and yellow tee-shirts to all of the games this year. So rebellious!

FAIR TIME!

So the first thing I did after dropping my gear off at the booth was to pick up a corn dog. Delicious. I don't have a picture. The corn dog didn't last longer than 3 blocks. I then promptly bought some Dole whip and another hot dog. Again, no photos, but both were enjoyed thoroughly.

After the 6 and a couple short vosots, Frank and I took the golf cart up to machinery hill to try the Gizmo. He had raved about it, but I'd never had it. It's essentially a hoagie roll filled with goodness.

Spicy sausage, a bit of tomato sauce and cheese. Fantastic.

Shortly thereafter, for desert, I had big fat bacon.

No, really, that's what it's called. I call it delicious.

Just wrapped up a pretty cool trip. Schop and I went to Bandon for 3 days. We played three rounds of golf and shot a five part series on the golf resort in Bandon. The courses there are world class. Really, why? That wasn't rhetorical, I don't have the answer.

Anyway, amid the chaos that was this morning's 3 alarm fire that I went to but didn't do anything at I snapped this.

I won't complain about long cable runs for a while.

My main story for the day was lame. Something about mortgage regulation... which included a very rushed trip to Salem. A usually good reporter managed to include a 50 sec track in her script! followed by a 26 second bite! Neither of us really cared about this one.

At the end of a mediocre day... a 4 car fatal in beaverton. Flew it, nice light, snapped off another pic on the way back:

This was my story today, a hit and run on a parked car. Nobody killed, no damage other than what you see here... and it happened oh, Saturday morning!?! Yeah! 48 hours after the dust settled, we talk to a few locals and get the usual sound: "I couldn't believe it!", "Why didn't they just have the decency to stop?", "At least no one was killed!" UGH! And, 3 live shots!!! At least we didn't hear, "You guys are late, this happened Saturday." ARGH!!! I wish the car had been full of orphans and puppies! Then it would have been a story! Wow I sound like Padula.

I'm back from my overnight adventure. Next time there's a full moon on a Friday, I'm calling in sick. I had a live shot, house fire, house fire, shooting, shooting, freeway shooting with three scenes... And as I left, the next photographer had two more house fires and the aforementioned shooting to tackle.

I guess my reward for sticking through the night was a sunrise.

I work overnights this weekend, so I forced myself to sleep in, took myself to a movie and did some small errands.

I didn't get a nap in so 4 am is going to be tough, but I did get some good relaxing time on the hammock.

Batman opens tonight and I got the job of giving the people a live picture of the line.

I also shot a web extra for a skate park tournament and a VO on a community block party. What a day.

Today I had dinner with our newest reporter at a fantastic diner I've wanted to try for a while now. Everyone's favorite reporter, Jason DeRusha, has extolled the virtues of this place for the past year and, until tonight, I had not experienced it myself.

Me: "Jason, what do you recommend at the Town Talk?"
Jason: "Well, if you're going for pure junk food, go for the cheese curds. Best cheese curds I've ever had."

Oh, Jason. How correct you are.

They are greasier than they look.
And 10 times more delicious.
And yes, that ketchup is indeed 'bacon ketchup.'

My day off.

Every Tuesday is knitting day. Well, at least two hours in the evening is when I go knit in St. Paul.

I was introduced to this store and this knitting group by Maya. It's a small little store in an unassuming neighborhood right next to a great coffee shop and when you walk in you are hit with color.

I like to knit when I go to knit group. But I have to say, the main event is hearing what the others have to say.

In an interesting twist of fate, the company that runs the satellite uplink leases space in 'CCO's building. That's right. He's just down the hall right now.

Today we celebrated the life of Mieko.

Mieko was born with trisomy 18 and wasn't expected to live even a few hours. As Mieko's parents said today, hours turned to days, days turned to weeks, weeks into months, and months into over 4 years. She went to school, learned to walk with a walker and lived life exceeding all expectations. Last week her lungs and heart betrayed her and she left us.

Her parents, family and friends released balloons this afternoon to celebrate her life.

Her mother, Maya, is a reporter I work with.
I am amazed at how strong she is.

Today is Lisa's last day.

She just got a kick ass job as the media rep for the sheriff's department. Monday through Friday, holidays off, and it's a city job. I gotta get me one of those.

Bike Trip '08

I decided to go fir a bike ride with my friends last month...

We ate at the finest establishments...

Climbed in cages with pet bears...

And nearly melted in the desert of Utah!

Those 2 middle pics were taken in the "town" of Mitchel, Oregon. Not much going on there, except for the town's celebrity Hugh and his PET BEAR! Yeah, he keeps it in a large cage at his gas station, feeds it, shovels its shit, and wrestles the damn thing! When he asked if I wanted to get in the cage to take a better pic I jumped on the opportunity. After snapping off a couple I realized I was in a cage with a bear... and got the hell out!

Anyway, upon retuning to stumptown I realized that y'all blog a lot. (except lucky) Hopefully I'll get caught up with the OLY trials coverage by the time the real games start!
