Day Off

Avoiding the masses is tough to do sometimes, especially when hiking around a big ass waterfall right next to an interstate.

Plenty o' parking

Farther up the trail, where few go, is the really cool stuff.

Thursday, just a bit late!

Hannah got into town tonite. We went to this Cuban place that has a laundromat next door, and a pay phone??? across the street.

The outdoor dining was "streetside"

Wednesday?

Why are all assignment desk people a bit crazy?

Really, why? That wasn't rhetorical, I don't have the answer.

Anyway, amid the chaos that was this morning's 3 alarm fire that I went to but didn't do anything at I snapped this.

I won't complain about long cable runs for a while.

My main story for the day was lame. Something about mortgage regulation... which included a very rushed trip to Salem. A usually good reporter managed to include a 50 sec track in her script! followed by a 26 second bite! Neither of us really cared about this one.

At the end of a mediocre day... a 4 car fatal in beaverton. Flew it, nice light, snapped off another pic on the way back:

Still Recovering

"Weekend Illness" hasn't subsided yet. So my lack of energy and desire to just get through the damn day (sleeping for the last 2 hours on the couch didn't help either) has left me with this.

Officials say, it's time for a file story:

What do you do when hiking in the snow??? Keep the wind off your friend's face! Of course.

Then you race down the hill.

The end.

NEWs?

This was my story today, a hit and run on a parked car. Nobody killed, no damage other than what you see here... and it happened oh, Saturday morning!?! Yeah! 48 hours after the dust settled, we talk to a few locals and get the usual sound: "I couldn't believe it!", "Why didn't they just have the decency to stop?", "At least no one was killed!" UGH! And, 3 live shots!!! At least we didn't hear, "You guys are late, this happened Saturday." ARGH!!! I wish the car had been full of orphans and puppies! Then it would have been a story! Wow I sound like Padula.

on another note:

Remember him? Lucky and Dusty won't, but this is more proof that there's life after KEZI... For Jesse here it involves a DNE 700 in a room with no windows. Not much has changed.

Being Sick Part 2: The highlight of my day.

BUBB RUBB in the NCAA Football 09 commercial!

Woo wooooooo!!!

Sick Day

Some can be good (the non-sick ones), and some can suck... like today.

What a great way to start the week!

Guapo, you feeling OK? This kinda started the night after we had beers.

Saturday

Good morning, amigos!

I'm back from my overnight adventure. Next time there's a full moon on a Friday, I'm calling in sick. I had a live shot, house fire, house fire, shooting, shooting, freeway shooting with three scenes... And as I left, the next photographer had two more house fires and the aforementioned shooting to tackle.

I guess my reward for sticking through the night was a sunrise.

My day is over.

Friday

I work overnights this weekend, so I forced myself to sleep in, took myself to a movie and did some small errands.

I didn't get a nap in so 4 am is going to be tough, but I did get some good relaxing time on the hammock.

IMG_7446

Is there anything better than a hammock?
Strike that - Is there anything better than a hammock and a margarita?

Thursday

It has felt like Friday all day, which, of course, it's not, because it's Thursday. Damn.

Batman opens tonight and I got the job of giving the people a live picture of the line.

IMG_1450

Wow.

I also shot a web extra for a skate park tournament and a VO on a community block party. What a day.

Now let me share something with you, Gentlemen. If you haven't come across Dr. Horrible yet, may I be the first to send you there.

Go and watch the two acts. The third is released on Saturday. I think you'll enjoy it.

Wednesday

Also my day off.

Today I had dinner with our newest reporter at a fantastic diner I've wanted to try for a while now. Everyone's favorite reporter, Jason DeRusha, has extolled the virtues of this place for the past year and, until tonight, I had not experienced it myself.

Me: "Jason, what do you recommend at the Town Talk?"
Jason: "Well, if you're going for pure junk food, go for the cheese curds. Best cheese curds I've ever had."

Oh, Jason. How correct you are.

Image002

They are greasier than they look.
And 10 times more delicious.
And yes, that ketchup is indeed 'bacon ketchup.'

And here's a pretty picture of Lake Nokomis

IMG_1443

which I now need to run around several times to counteract those cheese curds...

I think I'm going to go throw up now.

Tuesday

My day off.

Every Tuesday is knitting day. Well, at least two hours in the evening is when I go knit in St. Paul.

IMG_7404

I was introduced to this store and this knitting group by Maya. It's a small little store in an unassuming neighborhood right next to a great coffee shop and when you walk in you are hit with color.

IMG_7413

I like to knit when I go to knit group. But I have to say, the main event is hearing what the others have to say.

Monday 2.0

I have to share...

Okay, so this guy has been on the fence - will he or won't he run for the US senate. He refuses to talk to Minnesota media. He is on national news tonight to announce his plans. In an interesting twist of fate, the company that runs the satellite uplink leases space in 'CCO's building. That's right. He's just down the hall right now.

We've staked out the doors.

Kris has the back door,
Stakeout 006

Joe's got the alley,
Stakeout 007

and Andy's rockin' the front door with a lounge chair and the DS.
Stakeout 001

That guy is always prepared.

I love it when the story comes to us.

Monday

Today we celebrated the life of Mieko.

Mieko 003

Mieko was born with trisomy 18 and wasn't expected to live even a few hours. As Mieko's parents said today, hours turned to days, days turned to weeks, weeks into months, and months into over 4 years. She went to school, learned to walk with a walker and lived life exceeding all expectations. Last week her lungs and heart betrayed her and she left us.

Her parents, family and friends released balloons this afternoon to celebrate her life.

Mieko 001

Her mother, Maya, is a reporter I work with.
I am amazed at how strong she is.

Sunday

I'm ready to start my week of posting. I don't have an exciting sporting event in my town to show you this week. Nor do I have a collection of excellent signage to share. Today, since I'm inside editing the sports show, I'll share with you my base of operations.

wcco- 032

Today is Lisa's last day.

wcco- 024

She just got a kick ass job as the media rep for the sheriff's department. Monday through Friday, holidays off, and it's a city job. I gotta get me one of those.

PASSING THE TORCH

Alright...one last post to call attention to the fact that I'm passing the torch. My week long assignment is up. Dusty...it's your turn.

Hope you have more to offer than my shitty tent shots.

4th of July

Olympic Trials Style...which is to say...more time in the tent. I popped out of the tent for about 30 seconds tonight to catch a glimpse and snap of the fireworks show.

Whoo!?
Eh...not so much.

Bike Trip '08

I decided to go fir a bike ride with my friends last month...

We ate at the finest establishments...

Climbed in cages with pet bears...

And nearly melted in the desert of Utah!

Those 2 middle pics were taken in the "town" of Mitchel, Oregon. Not much going on there, except for the town's celebrity Hugh and his PET BEAR! Yeah, he keeps it in a large cage at his gas station, feeds it, shovels its shit, and wrestles the damn thing! When he asked if I wanted to get in the cage to take a better pic I jumped on the opportunity. After snapping off a couple I realized I was in a cage with a bear... and got the hell out!

Anyway, upon retuning to stumptown I realized that y'all blog a lot. (except lucky) Hopefully I'll get caught up with the OLY trials coverage by the time the real games start!

Look at all the people with cameras running! I don't think that lens is long enough to pole vault with.

ROCKIN' THE STASH

Apparently this runner doesn't realize that this look was only cool in 1972. And...it was only cool if you were a badass runner like Pre. Not some schmuck who can't even make the Olympic Team.

Pop Quiz...what's the difference between me and this guy? He has a stash, I don't. What do we have in common? Neither of us are members of the Olympic Team. OH SNAP!

Ooga Chucka

Some bad audio from the REO Speedwagon concert tonight lead to some creativity on the part of our anchors.

Hilarity ensues.

FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL

This has to be quick...i'm late.

I don't know if I've ever explained how we feed from the field before, but basically, we take this Dell Laptop everywhere we go. It's equipped with Avid News Cutter. We firewire straight into it from our DV camera. Edit our shit, export the sequence as a quicktime mov file, and uploaded it to an intranet system housed at Chambers. We do that with a real simple drag and drop program called FileZilla. Back in house, any number of people, usually Schop, download the file from the intranet system we upload to, drop the video onto an Avid sequence, and dump the sucka to tape. No obvious compression to it...no loss of quality. It's a pretty sweet little set up. When it works.

iDead

Stupid iPod is as worthless as shit these days. Damn thing can't hold a charge that last more than a day's use. I've gotten into the habit of charging it nightly...still though...sometimes it still isn't worth more than a bike ride to work. The rides home have been awkwardly silent. I hate silence. Well...sometimes it's okay. But not when you're trying to muster up the energy to take a 6 mile bike ride at the end of a long day.

CANON-LAND

AT THE TRIALS...IN THE MEDIA TENT...THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF HIGH END, PRO CANON CAMERAS, STRAPPED WITH ALL SORTS OF LENSES...JUST LAYING AROUND. STILL PHOTOGS JUST TOSS THEIR CRAP INTO RANDOM PILES ON THE GROUND, AND LEAVE THEM THERE. IF I WANTED, I COULD PROBABLY WALK AWAY WITH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN STOLEN CANON EQUIPMENT. LUCKY FOR THEM...I'M NOT A THIEF.
